Helpful information about 1973-1975 Century GS cars
Dash cowl tag
This is one of the first important pieces of your car. This is called the cowl tag. The information on this tag, will help you determine alot of things about your car, such as Color, interior, and build date. This tag is located on the top of the cowl on the passenger side. If you open the hood and look down where the passenger side wiper is,you will locate it. It is held on with 2 screws unlike the prior years, which used rivets and were located on the driver side.
Wholesale Order Form
The above form was used when the buyer went to the dealer to purchase a car. They looked at the options and checked off the ones they preferred. You chose different motors, transmissions, wheels, radios as well as other options. The dealer submitted the information to GM and this is how the car was built. There were also forms like this for Century 350 cars and non GS models.
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN ) Tag
The VIN on the dash of your car also gives out important information about your car.It helps you know what motor your car came with, which plant it was produced at as well as if its a GS or not.It also gives you the sequence number and helps you determine if the motor and transmission are original to this car. The motor and transmission have the last 6 digits stamped of the VIN on them.A breakdown of the VIN would be as follows for the VIN on my car which is....

Production Buildsheet
This paper is what is commonly referred to as the buildsheet for the cars when the assembly workers built them. The used the codes on them to see exactly what parts were to be installed on a particular car. These are invaluable to have as it shows what options a specific Vin Numbered car should have. Unfortunately, alot of cars do not have them as they were not left in them for one reason or another. Another problem that was common, was the wrong sheet was left in a different car,so it would be of no use to that car. Some strange places they have been located in cars are on top of the gas tank, behind door panels, stuffed into the rear or front seat springs etc.As well, the 3 plants that produced the GS cars all aused a different way to use these sheets
Sloan documentation
The above paperwork is what you receive from the Alfred Sloan museum. They have the Buick microfische for the 72-75 cars and some of the 70 Buick cars as well and when you provide them with your VIN and payment .can tell you vital things about your car. If you do not have a Buildsheet, they have it on record as to what your car was built with. It will also give the dealer to which your car was delivered, the dealer zone code in most instances, invoice number, car colorcost of your car as well as other important information. This is the first page for my car as I do not have a buildsheet for my car.
Sloan paperwork 2nd page
The second sheet you receive from Sloan Museum, shows the original key numbers,(which I suggest making a copy of and blocking them out,if you share with others as they can go to a GM dealer and punch out new keys and possibly drive your car away)It also designates that my car came with a special order paint, and all the option codes for the car that were marked on the Wholesale order sheet.it also gives the Body number as well as trim number.
Sloan Wholesale order sheet
This is a copy of the wholesale order form for my car from Sloan Museum.Typically, this is what it would have looked like when you went to the dealer and he marked off all the options you wanted. Unlike today, where most people just purchase a car from the lot,my car was special ordered by the owner.
1973 Suncoupe models
In 1973, there were 556 Suncoupe models produced. They offered an electrically operated version as well as a manual operated version. Some GS cars were also produced with this option. The electric models were UPC code Y42 or Z3 on the wholsale order form and the manual models were UPC Code Y59 or Z1 on the wholesale order form. Cost for the manual was $290.00 and the electric model was $340.00. There were 138 electric models and 418 manual models produced.I have no further breakdown as to how many GS models had each option, but have information that a couple do exist.
